Using QR Codes in the Classroom

With all the new technology available you can create some fun activities for the classroom. I have to say there are some things that I bulk at or have a difficult time getting started using in this technological age even though I consider myself "Tech Savvy". In one of my college courses I was told that if you were born before 1980 you are considered a Technology Immigrant and if you were born after 1980 you were a Technology Native. Where does that leave me??? I was born right smack in the middle in the year 1980! I decided I go either way because of my comfort in some areas and reluctance in others.

It has taken me only a year to embrace QR codes! I first learned about them at a local technology conference and the thought of using them was put in my back pocket. No more! I emptied my back pockets and embedded QR codes in my cooperative learning activity of I Have Who Has Customary Measurement. You can find my new product at either of my stores. You can either visit my store on the right or Click HERE to purchase.

I did some researching on the internet and found a nice site that allows for creating QR codes and saving the code to your computer to embed into your documents. QR Generator allows you to customize your codes as well and is a web-based program.  This QR Generator allows for many different kinds of QR codes.  I used the text code so students could check their work in iPad Notes, but you can also create codes for a URL to a code linking to a YouTube video.

You must have a QR Reader to be able to access the information in the codes.  The following is a great resource if you are needing more information on QR Codes. Click HERE for more information

QR Code Uses In the Classroom
  • Use a QR Code in you Classroom Newsletter to link to you Class Webpage.
  • Use a QR Code to link to an online survey or assessment.
  • Use a QR Code to have students check their own work in iPad Notes.
  • Use a QR Code to allow students to access supplemental materials.
  • Use a QR Code to create a scavenger hunt around the school.
Suggestions when using codes:
  1. I recommend checking codes before presenting them to your audience.  This will make your activity or code work more smoothly.
  2. If wanting to save your codes create a folder on your computer specifically for a project.
I would love to hear more about how you are using QR codes in your classroom, so please make sure you leave a comment to share!  Please also try out a QR code by taking this very short survey ~ it is only ONE question :)
